Losses & drawdown

MODULE 07 · PSYCHOLOGY
FREE PREVIEW. This is 1 of 16 lessons in MASTERY.

You will take losses this week, next month and in year ten. Nobody trades without them. What separates the trader who lasts from the one who blows up is not how many losses they take. It is what they do in the minute after.

WHAT A LOSS IS

A loss on a valid setup, at your fixed risk, is a cost of doing business. A shop pays rent. You pay stops. You risk a small fixed amount precisely so that no single loss matters, and if the setup was right and the stop was right, nothing went wrong. Journal it and move on.

A loss on a setup you should not have taken is different. That one was you. Not the market, not the algorithm, not bad luck. You broke a rule, and the loss is the invoice.

THE MINUTE AFTER

Do not get angry at the market. Do not take another trade to win it back. Write the trade down, close the platform, and log off. Come back the next morning and look at the chart as if yesterday did not happen, because the moment you carry a loss into the next day, you are trading the loss instead of the chart, and that is the losing mindset that empties accounts.

Drawdown is a series of losses in a row, and it is part of every real edge. Weeks of it. Sometimes a month. Your account goes down and stays down for a while, and then, if the model is sound and you kept executing it, the series pays and the curve climbs past where it was. Go into every day prepared to see a red number. The drawdown is a window in the business, not the end of it.

TAKEAWAY
  • A loss on a valid setup is a cost. Journal it, move on.
  • A loss on a broken rule was you.
  • After a loss: no anger, no revenge trade. Log off.
  • Next morning: a fresh chart. Yesterday does not exist.
  • Drawdown is part of every edge. A window, not the end.
